If you are not a wine drinker or big wine fan yourself it can be tricky to create the perfect wine list for your pub. There are so many different wines at different price ranges out there. How can you make sure you have created the perfect wine list? Of course you could just copy a local pub and have the same wine list as them. However your customers are different.
It is essential that you create the perfect wine list for your pub.
The first thing you need to do is get to know your locals and what they want. If you have a pub of beer drinkers and gin drinkers then you might not need to have a huge wine list. However, if you are constantly serving glasses of wine, then consider a longer wine list with more options.
Think about the food you are offering too, and the wines that match those meals. For example if you are serving lots of warming pub grub then hearty red wines will popular. Alternatively if you have a menu that is predominantly made up of fish dishes you may want more white wine options available.
You need to think about prices too. If you are charging £3.20 for a pint of bitter, you need to have similar prices for your wine. If a couple comes into your pub they want to be charged for their drinks on a roughly even basis. Otherwise you could be at risk of a lovers tiff over the prices of your drink. They could then both go elsewhere.
Why not speak to your wine supplier about doing a wine tasting event. They can bring a selection of your wines and run an evening for your locals where they taste the wines. You can then gain the opinions of your customers on what wines they like. You could charge for tickets for the event to make profit for your pub, or to give to a local charity. The wine tasting event will also get your pub talked about and there will be excitement for your upcoming new wine list.
